Vicar's Letter
Lent begins on the 9th March. Lent is a period of six weeks before Easter. Christians use this time to prepare themselves spiritually in order to be able to celebrate Easter properly. We do this by engaging in spiritual disciplines and honest self examination.
There are many different spiritual disciplines you might like to adopt for Lent. You might want to do something from the following list:
· Set aside a particular time each day to pay or meditate
· Find out how to meditate (ask me about appropriate books)
· Start using some daily Bible notes (there are some at the back of church)
· Pray through the newspaper each day
· Fast every Saturday allowing yourself two cups of tea/coffee each mealtime
· Read a devotional or theological book
· Try to live more simply - think twice before you jump in the car; think twice before you take a bottle of wine off the supermarket shelf
· Spend time on your own in solitude
· Visit someone you've been putting off visiting
· Do a good deed each day
· Consider whether you are a suitable person to offer to help lead our scouts or brownies etc.
· Consider whether you would like formally to make confession to a Priest or other spiritual guide
· Come to church every Sunday
Whatever you do, do something to make a difference in your routine this Lent. And each time you do it, ask God to be resurrected in your life. Enjoy a blessed Lent.
Matthew.

Vicar's Letter

Apparently British people now spend more on merchandise for Halloween than we do for St.Valentine's day. Still, the consumerist potential for the 14th February is enormous. How many cards will you send? And will you buy a cute teddy bear or a helium-filled heart-shaped balloon? Chocolates will do nicely for me.

But why do we associate all this with St.Valentine? We do not know much about him; and what we do know doesn't particularly connect him with lovers. He was a priest or a bishop of Terni who was martyred at Rome under the Emporer Claudius in the year 269 AD. That's it. As for the 14th February, there was a pagan festival in Rome on the Ides of February; and apparently in medieval times people believed it was the day when birds mated.

We use the day, though, to acknowledge an all-loving God who blesses those who love one another. Consider this 17th century hymn:

My God, I love thee; not because

I hope for heaven thereby,

nor yet because who love thee not

are lost eternally.

Not from the hope of gaining aught,

not seeking a reward;

but as thyself hast loved me,

O ever-loving Lord.

E'en so I love thee, and will love,

and in thy praise will sing;

solely because thou art my God,

and my eternal King.

Matthew.

All the churches in Rastrick are joining forces once again to have joint Lent Groups

This year will be using Biblefresh material written by Tom Wright the former Bishop of Durham. It focuses on St.Matthew's Gospel. It is an initiative aimed to encourage people to be confident about the Bible and in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible.

We're looking for people to lead the groups and for people who will offer to host a group in their home. If you would like to do either, please let the Revd Stephen Hannam know by 6 February, tel. 01484 716053.

The groups will start in the week beginning Monday 14 March and will run for five weeks.
