Beer and Banter - the Globe
The first gathering of this new monthly Friday night venture 'just for men' was an enjoyable evening where we were joined by Paul Blakey, the project manager from Halifax Street Angels.
Paul (who spoke for about 45 min) arrived in his high visibility jacket in preparation to go straight to work as a Street Angel in Halifax where between 9pm and 3am he along with up to 20 volunteers provide a service on a Friday and Saturday evenings. Halifax Street Angels was launched in November 2005 born out of God inspiring churches together in Halifax to look at the needs of the town, one with a reputation as the 'wild west of Yorkshire' with violence, binge drinking, sexual assaults and drunkenness commonplace on Friday and Saturday nights.
Volunteers mainly from Halifax churches with a real concern for the town and its people put words and faith into action and made a difference demonstrating that Gods kingdom of peace, safety, harmony and help for the vulnerable is actually possible. Based at the Fair Trade cafe in Crossley Street and through effective partnerships with police, pub management and many others have helped reduce violent crime in the town by 42% (in 2006 and by 20% in 2007).
We were inspired by the courage and determination of Paul and other angels, the Street Angel's model has been shared not only in the UK but across the world. Paul had already been asked by police to visit Brighouse and we were challenged to set up a scheme in our own town? Further details www.streetangels.org.uk.
The next meeting of 'Beer and Banter' in on Friday 7th November where we will be joined by Ephson Ngadya the founder of Grassroots Theatre company from Zimbabwe who are currently touring the UK with their performance 'living through oppression' . Ephson will talk about the work of Grassroots and his vision to educate and inform - it will be an experience not to be missed please come along were we will meet at the Globe from 8pm in the conservatory.
